Skunk # 1 is the original ‘Skunk of the Skunks’, a foundational strain that helped shape modern cannabis culture. It is known for its uniformity, stability, and impressive yield, making it one of the most beloved classic strains ever.
This Sativa-dominant variety produces large, easy-to-manicure buds with a favorable flower-to-leaf ratio. Its pungent terpene profile delivers a potent high that can last for hours, and it’s also known for its flavorful and aromatic qualities. Skunk # 1 is also surprisingly easy to grow, making it a favorite among both novice and experienced cultivators.
Skunk # 1 has been behind many Cannabis Cup wins and new cannabis crossings over the past 40 years. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was one of the standout strains of its time. The buds, a blend of South American Sativas and an Afghan Indica, were nothing short of impressive.
Our own Skunk # 1 won first prize at the High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam in 1992 as Super Haze (Haze x Skunk # 1). That same year, Master Kush (Hindu Kush x Skunk # 1) also took home a Cannabis Cup win. These genetics are so strong that they often produce award-winning qualities even in their offspring.
Skunk # 1 has a classic, pungent Skunk aroma with sweet, sour, spicy, and earthy notes. The scent is unmistakable—often likened to the smell of a skunk—and can even evoke associations with cat pee due to its sometimes sour character.
In terms of flavor, it’s sweet and fruity with a sour undertone. The earthy and spicy elements are less pronounced in the taste, but the overall experience is rich and memorable. If you're looking for an authentic Skunk scent and taste, Skunk # 1 is a must-try.
Skunk # 1 revolutionized cannabis cultivation by offering a stable, high-yielding, and easy-to-grow strain. Before its introduction, many growers struggled with unstable seeds and unpredictable phenotypes. Skunk # 1 changed that by delivering a consistent product with high potency and yield.
This classic strain produces thick buds with a favorable leaf-to-flower ratio, making them easy to manicure. It’s a very commercial variety, suitable for indoor, outdoor, and greenhouse cultivation.
Skunk # 1 is a Sativa-dominant hybrid (75% Sativa, 25% Indica), originally created by crossing 25% Afghan, 25% Acapulco Gold, and 50% Colombian Gold. It was stabilized and inbred in 1978 to become a homogeneous variety.
Alongside the original Haze and Afghan strains, Skunk # 1 is one of the three foundational strains that transformed the cannabis world. It brought together high quality, high yield, and quick flowering time in a robust and easy-to-grow strain. This is truly a world-class hybrid.
Skunk # 1 has a Sativa-dominant plant structure with long branches and many growth points. It grows vigorously, reaching upwards and outwards in width. The buds are large, sturdy, and sometimes completely fill the branches.
The flowers often have foxtails, a classic Sativa trait, while the partial Indica genetics make them more compact and harder than those of pure Sativas. The sticky resin coating is characteristic of an Afghan Indica and contributes to the strain’s rich aroma and flavor.
During flowering, Skunk # 1 stretches significantly but remains manageable. Its growth pattern is more Sativa-like, but the right balance of Indica genetics provides stronger branches and a shorter flowering time. It’s suitable for SOG and SCROG techniques, with short to medium internode spacing and adaptability for all growers.
Due to its thick buds, Skunk # 1 can be slightly sensitive to mold and bud rot, especially in the final weeks of flowering. Proper support with ropes or poles is recommended to prevent branch breakage.
